Liturature disguised as SF

Not having been real impressed with Jeter's take on Blade Runner, it was almost amazing that I gave The Glass Hammer a try. It was a difficult book to begin reading, and I almost gave up. But it paid off in the end. The Glass Hammer is undoubtably one of my favorite books of all time. Having just finished it -- again -- I felt compelled to let others know that if you can find this book, read it. The first 30-40 pages of it are a difficult read. Jeter writes a story about a man, Schuyler, who races across the Arizona desert night amid hailing laser missiles to deliver illegal computer chips to European buyers. He has become a minor celebrity by apparently being the father of the second coming of God. A production company is doing a bio of Schuyler and the story is writen as part present and part past, told as both video images and memories. Difficult to follow at first, but once you get into the flow, the story becomes engrossing, and the plot even more intricate. Well worth reading, even if you are not a fan of the genre.

Invites favorable comparison to Philip K. Dick

K.W. Jeter has sometimes been compared to the incomparable Philip K. Dick, who was Jeter's close friend. While Dick's influence on Jeter's work is not always apparent, in the case of The Glass Hammer, the comparison is apt. The story has the religious overtones that characterize Dick's later novels. The novel's presentation of religion is ambiguous: often satirical yet, in the end, raising the possibility of true belief. The satire is hilarious: the Godfriends, a female religious sect, believe that they will give birth to the child of God if they become pregnant and so avoid pregnancy--until one of them becomes pregnant by the novel's protagonist. A more mainstream religious organization devotes extensive resources to the reconstruction of stained glass windows, using elaborate computer programs to calculate the probable arrangement of the glass before the windows were destroyed. The rest of the novel deals with a post-apocalyptic future in which industrial forces use the media and religion to control and placate the uneducated workforce.

The Glass Hammer is written in an interesting style, switching between conventional narrative and the format of a shooting script. Characterization is sometimes weak and logic is sometimes lost, but Jeter's ideas are powerful and the payoff at the end makes the novel worth reading.

I really enjoyed the first book, and this second volume was not nearly as good. A LOT of typos - every page had errors. The story was OK, but nothing really happened. If you are looking for something better, try Origin ARS or one of the many other options.

These books are also quite short. That's fine if the author puts effort into making the work above average, but that was not the case here. I gave it three stars because I did finish it, but it was borderline a two star book.

Good story, ok writing

Most of my review for part 1 covers this book as well. There is something compelling me to want to know where the story is going to, but the writing style feels a bit disjuncted and abrupt. It should also have been combined with part 1 simply because this volume actually lifts a bit of the veil to show that more is going on than meets the eye and which explains some of the oddities of the first part.

This second book was better than the first one ( it made me even read both of them twice) it may look too expensive but again for real fans of litrpg its worth it.
(spoiller alert)
I gave 4,5 stars because I feel its a bit incomplete specially in the "sacred arts" department because it isn't well explained the stamina and sacred arts use ratio, the auther just throws some percentages (60% , 50%, 40% of stamina cost and yet they are used multiple times in a row...) and says that in time they are "reduced" and I belive that in the skills/stats pages that show up from time to time it should also show all the sacred arts and their current cost like (triple stab and another one from the first book that seems to have been forgotten).

My Children Now Love Kale and Cabbage!!! (Oakton, VA)

Last evening, I prepared the Cavolo Nero and Red Cabbage Tostadas with Spicy Shrimp and Cumin-Scented Vinaigrette for my husband and two sons (ages 10 and 7). I used the recipe in the Sept issue of "O Magazine" which features a great article on Jewels and Jill Elmore. My family was skeptical when they saw me using ingredients that they don't usually rave about (kale, red cabbage, black beans). They loved it!!! Even my 7 year old (who is a skinny chicken tender/pizza kid) could not stop eating these healthy, flavorful Tostadas. Of course, I am now ordering the "Family Chef" Cookbook. Thanks so much Jewells and Jill for helping my children (and my husband for that matter) to enjoy kale and cabbage!!!

The Best!

The Family Chef is my perfect cookbook! Thank you Jewels and Jill. Delicious, healthy, beautiful recipes that my family and friends can't resist. I made a feast for 12 people almost entirely from The Family Chef and a week later everyone is still raving about the food! I gave both of my daughters-in-law copies of The Family Chef and have now ordered a few extra books to give out to friends and guests. Thanks for all the wonderful recipes and helpful tips - but mostly, thank you for the great inspiration!

A fab addition to my cookbook library

In seeing how perfect Jennifer Aniston always looks, naturally I began to wonder who cooks for her. Research online led me to Jewels Ellmore and to this cookbook. I was looking for some healthy inspiration, so The Family Chef has been a great addition to my cookbook library. I read it cover to cover, which is something I rarely do with cookbooks. I think I bookmarked nearly 30 recipes. The photos are colorful and appetizing. I have only made a few recipes so far, but I've really liked them all. This cookbook isn't filled with rocket science, but instead it's a glimpse into how these two chefs live and what they normally feed their families. You get a sense of items that they commonly use, like quinoa, and an explanation of why they choose the ingredients they do. If anything, this book motivates you to use quality ingredients which result in 'cleaner' cooking.

I'm giving this cookbook 4 stars because it's missing one key section... dessert! Even one of their clients raves on the back cover about a peach cobbler or something like that... and there is no mention of desserts anywhere. Hmm, maybe that's because Jennifer Aniston doesn't eat them? :) I'm not looking for sugar laden syrupy sweets, but some ideas of what they'd normally cook for dessert would be great.

Overall a great cookbook, one of my new favorites!

Lots of great ideas

This book caught my eye in a book store. I didnt wanna just randomly buy it, but thought about it and eventually did get it.

I like it for the varied ideas, some really neat, some more simple. I like it rates it all, but the time estimates are based on a heavy duty mixer.

Hand mixing some of the recipies is not reccommended... I spent 6 hours beating evil egg whites, yolks, ect. in one recipie because I am a glutton for punishment, but it turned out great.

One issue is sometimes it is a tad vague because they have to cram alot of info in one page.

Beautiful book

My 13 year old granddaughter picked this book for a Christmas gift. She has been inspired to learn how to bake from watching TV cooking shows and can really make things that look like the picture. She liked the format of one large color photo next to one recipe on a page. The price on Amazon was way below the book store and I bought all my books on line so I wouldn't have to carry them when shopping. They are very heavy.

Love this book. Great if you enjoy baking and want a book with the greatest recipes all in one book. A must have in any kitchen, residential or commercial
