About the Author
George H. Williams is the former Hollis Professor of Divinity at Harvard Divinity School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Williams is credited with helping to revitalize the Divinity School at Harvard University and produced the first comprehensive history of the school in 1954.

A UNIQUE COLLECTION (IN ENGLISH) OF RARE WRITINGS

This book contains writings of a variety of Protestant writers of the early to mid-16th century, including Thomas Muntzer, Conrad Grebel, Balthasar Hubmaier, Sebastian Franck, Caspar Schwenckfeld, Melchior Hoffman, Obbe Philips, Dietrich Philips, Menno Simons, and Juan de Valdés.

One writer said in 1525, "the pope did not derive infant baptism from Holy Scripture any more than purgatory, the Mass, prayer to the saints, letters of indulgence, and all the rest." (Pg. 41-42) Hofmann wrote in 1530, "all human notions are sternly forbidden by the Lord, and pedobaptism is absolutely not from God but rather is practiced, out of willfulness, by anti-Christians and the satanic crowd, in opposition to God..." (Pg. 193)

Hubmaier wrote in 1527, "The reason that the fall of the soul is partly reparable, however, and not fatal, even here on earth, but the fall of flesh is to a certain extent irreparable and deadly, is that Adam, as a type of the soul (as is Eve, of the flesh), would have preferred not to eat of the forbidden tree. He was also not deceived by the serpent, but Eve was..." (Pg. 121) Later, he added, "the soul, through the eating of the forbidden fruit, lost its perception of good and evil in the sight of God." (Pg. 128)

Franck is critical of the "doctors of unwisdom, apes of the apostles and antichrists," who "mix the New Testament with the Old," and "when they have nothing with which to defend their purposes, they run at once to the empty quiver, that is, to the Old Testament, and from it prove [the legitimacy of] war, oath, government, power of magistry, tithes, priesthood... and ascribe this all forcibly to Christ without his will." (Pg. 150-151) He concludes, "all that we have learned since childhood from the papists, we must all of a sudden again unlearn." (Pg. 160)

Many of these writings were not available in English prior to the publication of this volume; they are very illuminating for the history of the early Anabaptist movement.

Appreciate finding a translation of Obbe Philips Confession.

Some of these writings are hard to find. I had been searching for an English translation of Obbe Philips Confession and got and additional bonus of Sebastian Franke's letter. They are both very illustrative of the confusion and trauma of those times.

In can't say enough about how excellent this book is. Selections from major figures in the Anabaptist movement prefaced by detailed background information. Makes more sense about the complexities of the movement than anything I've seen so far. A must read for anyone studying the reformation.

Herbert Marks is Professor of Comparative Literature at Indiana University, where he also directs the Institute for Biblical and Literary Studies and edits the monograph series Indiana Studies in Biblical Literature. He is the editor of the Norton Critical Edition of The English Bible, King James Version: The Old Testament.

Gerald Hammond is Emeritus Professor of English at the University of Manchester. A Fellow of the British Academy, his many publications include The Making of the English Bible; Fleeting Things: English Poets and Poems, 1616– 1660; Sir Walter Raleigh’s Selected Writings; and John Skelton’s Selected Poems. He contributed the essay on English Bible translation to The Literary Guide to the Bible.

Austin M. Busch is Associate Professor of Early World Literatures in the Department of English at the State University of New York College at Brockport. His articles have appeared in the Journal of Biblical Literature, Biblical Interpretation, and The Classical Journal, and he is a contributing author of Seneca and the Self (Cambridge University Press). This edition is beyond praise, the whole thing is invaluable. My growse is about something not ultimately important, just irritating. Elsewhere I have complained that these books are only available in paperback, which makes temporary economic sense, but not for a lifetime's study. It is worth adding here that the "slipcover" to the two volumes -- shown in the picture above -- is just thick paper, not remotely sturdy, and cheap. It is unfathomable to me that Norton would spend all that money on such a brilliant enterprise and not showcase it properly.

This is a huge step in the direction toward an appreciation of The Bible as a literary anthology. The editorial notes and additional primary source materials are wonderful. The Norton Edition of The Bible will no doubt be the essential edition for new scholarship.

Norton Critical Edition of King James Version--a bargain!

Two-volume set is a bargain at $40.95 and free postage. I have read "Backgrounds" and "Exegesis" of New Testament, which I found dry and hard-going. I will enjoy "Poetic Reimaginings" more--I've taught most of them. I expect to find "Case Studies" and "Translation of 1 Corinthians 13" engaging. I haven't yet approached critical background on Old Testament.

I have read Luther's German Bible twice, Geneva Bible once, and King James Version twice. It's possible to read each one through in a year by reading 3 chapters a day from January through November and leaving Psalms until December. (I'm working on the Douai-Rheims Bible, which is hard to read within a year. It has 14 books or parts of books from the Old Testament, surviving in Greek not Hebrew and thus Deutero-canonical.)

This is the best pressure cooker book I have bought. It has recipes that aren't the old "crock pot-esque" stuff that is so prevalent in other PC cookbooks. I prepared Mr. Ehrlich's Duck Casserole and it was outstanding! For many years, I avoided getting a PC because of it being "dangerous". I remember being scared to death of the ones that my mother and grandmother had, hissing, spitting, Mom and Grams looking at it with big eyes, waiting for it to "explode and burn down the place"!! But the ones on the market now are perfectly safe. I have three of them now and love them. However, some of the PC cookbooks wind up a little lacking. Miss Vickie, the so-called guru of the PC, has within one of her books a section listing the cooking times of "Meats", "Pastas", "Grains", etc but I found that many of the pastas and vegetables were drastically overcooked when I followed her instructions. Anyone want some brussel sprout mush???

Yummy recipes for pressure cooker

I decided to save the environment by using a pressure cooker. Also, as a full time physician, I don't have time to cook during the week so anything that saves time is for me.

My brother Henry Ehrlich (see http://www.amazon.com/Food-Allergies-Traditional-Chinese-Medicine/dp/0984383220) informed me that my brother Richard Ehrlich has written this pressure cooker cook book. Richard is a terrific cook and writer and this book is excellent.

I've only made one recipe from this book, the steamed sponge pudding with jam, and it came out very well. I like the recipes and plan on trying more. The photos are good and it is an enjoyable book to look at.

Extremely informative information for future airline pilots

As stated above, extremely informative information for the future ailine pilot to be. This book is very easy to read, clear and concise. Irv gets right to the point on all his topics whether it would be writing the cover letter and resume to what color suit to wear to the interview. There is definitely an experience factor that went into writing this very short book.

A must buy for the on-going airline hiring boom.
