A very good, readable book that helped me see all the varieties of soups that are simple to make

I had no idea that there are (at least) 15 types of cold soups, and at least 20 varieties of pureed soups, in addition to stews, stock, pasta soups, seafood, chicken, and meat soups... Soup & Comfort, a Cookbook of Homemade Recipes to Warm the Soul is a fitting title. I'm partial to cream soups on a chilly night, and soup surely warms my soul on nights like that

The author has included gluten free recipes, as well as how to make non-gluten free recipes in this book into gluten free dishes. That is an unexpected delight, as I try to stay away from gluten when possible. There are also vegan dishes, as well as low-sodium dishes, too. There is also a food substitution inclusion which is helpful for me in particular because I do not drink wine. It's nice to see a cookbook that’s useful for several types of people with eating restrictions, and also include recipes with that old, homemade style.

The author also includes at the end of the book ideas for salads, sandwiches, and soup toppings. This book seems to cover many different topics (food allergies and intolerances, sodium levels, non-meat eaters, and creating a meal around soup.

I am not a fan of using a lot of ingredients when I cook. Luckily, my favorite soup, shrimp bisque was easy to prepare, and tasted great.

Soup and Comfort delicious recipes!!!

Pamela Ellegen makes every recipes sound delicious and mouthwatering. I have made chicken broth by using broth from my chicken soup. I tried the roasted chicken broth recipe and it is truly a delicious. This book has a little of everything. Soups, salads and sandwiches, staples of mostly everyone. The recipes are well written and easy to follow. I live in warm weather most of the year, but the few cold days we get, I will be trying other soups. I also tried the caprese panini, absolutely delicious. I like that it tells you how to store broths and leftovers. It tells you how long they last frozen or refrigerated. I would recommend this book to experienced and cooks just starting out.

Good for foodies and others with time to prepare meals, not rushed families

I enjoyed this book and several of the recipes contained within. Due to health issues and food allergies in my own family I find that I tend to cook from scratch more often than I buy pre-made foods. In the winter months I tend to utilize soup recipes because they are generally not labor intensive and can be very filling during the cold night in the north eastern part of the United States. While many of the recipes contained within add a unique twist to an old but good dish, I felt that many of the soups were very labor intensive. I am a working mom and while I would love to have more time to devote to cooking, I need to have dinner on the table at a reasonable time. While some recipes had crock-pot/slow cooker directions others did not. I wish that the author had included more soups that could be made in this manner to appeal to families where the family cook needs to be able to set dinner to cook while taking care of the home or even working.

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more soup recipes and who has ample time in the kitchen to prepare food. While some of the soups are family/child friendly others are not, and I say this from the perspective of having kids that will eat just about anything placed in front of them. I also wish that less soups had cilantro in them. For myself and many people, cilantro tastes like soap and it can ruin and otherwise good dish.

Despite these differences however, similar measures to those introduced in the West have been adopted by the Chinese state, which has largely abandoned the planned economy and adopted market mechanisms in the pursuit of improved economic efficiency and growth.

Evaluating the results of these reforms in both China and the West between 1978 and 2011, this book shows that despite substantial improvements in economic efficiency in both cases under consideration, there have been considerable negative impacts on the distribution of wealth, access to public services, levels of poverty, public health, and the incidence of crime. Further, this book explores the different results of NPM in China and the West and the conclusions Paolo Urio draws have timely significance, as he suggests that China has been able to change its policies more rapidly and thus more effectively respond to the challenges posed by the current economic crisis.

Drawing on both Western and Chinese sources, this innovative book compares the consequences of their public management reforms, taking into account the impact on both the economy and society. As such, this book will be of great interest to students and scholars working in the fields of Chinese studies, Asian studies, business, economics, strategic public management and comparative studies in capitalism and socialism.

About the Author

Paolo Urio is Professor Emeritus at the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences, University of Geneva, Switzerland. Professor Urio has undertaken research on China’s reforms since 1997 and has published Reconciling State, Market and Society in China (Routledge 2010) on the subject. Between 1998 and 2003 he organized and directed a programme that trained in public management more than 400 senior Chinese civil servants and senior Party cadres.

A Marvelous Guide and Inspiration to Fun, Enrichment and Fulfillment

I do not normally review more than one book by the same author, unless there is a really good reason for doing so. In the case of Sex and the Erotic Lover there is.

This book is a wonderful complement to her earlier Sex and the Perfect Lover and the more recent The Love Diet. What I really like about her work, and why I recommend it so whole heartedly, is that in all three books Mabel has demonstrated that she sees pleasure, sensuality, sexuality and spirituality as a seamless whole. There is no reason at all why things that are enlightening and enlivening should not also be fun. Having unselfconscious fun and being able to laugh at ourselves are sure signs that we are on the right road toward getting our life in order.

So many sexual problems are the result not of physical difficulties, but of energy and fatigue, attitude, expectation, upbringing and needless guilt. Of course, that is not the whole list, but it covers the lion's share of the issues that can cause much needless unhappiness. And Mabel has some good advice on how to deal with them.

As an indication of some of the material in the book, and Mabel's approach, she has a list of "Ten Revelations for Being Happy." You can read the whole list in the book, but in short, they are:

"Be thou exorcised, O Dracula!"

This is the first time I've read a novel 'inspired by [a] classic film' and I quite enjoyed the experience. Of course 'Carl Dreadstone' is a pseudonym for John Ramsey Campbell, who is one of our generation's leading writers of the supernatural, so "Dracula's Daughter" isn't the hack job it could have been from a lesser pen.

Even characters that horror film aficionados know will spend five minutes on screen then die horribly, are treated with respect by this author. I was made to care that they died. The horror of falling victim to a vampire is made stomach-churningly explicit (especially in the final chapters of this book) by the author's adoption of the victim's point-of-view. There were places in the foggy streets of London and the cobwebbed corridors of Castle Dracula where I was almost too afraid to continue reading.

However, I was also led to believe that Mr. Campbell did a bit of speed-writing in places, when I came across phrases like "his polished dome twitched like a hatching egg" or "with a smile as sweet as a skull's..."

There are an overabundance of meaningful glances and mesmerizing stares, but I expect they came directly from the movie, which was filmed in 1936. Vampire films from the early decades of the 20th Century were inevitably loaded with hypnotic stares à la Bela Lugosi.

Be sure to read the introduction to "Dracula's Daughter" which Mr. Campbell writes under his own name. He shares some interesting opinions on the casting and direction of this early vampire film.

I think vampire buffs will impressed by the personalities and relationships that this author manages to imbue with life (even Dracula's daughter!) within the frame of what was already becoming a clichéd movie theme.
