Dorian Gray is a great story!

The Picture of Dorian Gray is as good as you've head it is. This book includes both the original, and more controversial, text and the somewhat 'cleaned up' second version. The first is better, IMHO. Quite thrilling, and well worth the read.

Great views and thoughts on "The Picture Of Dorian Gray"

"The Picture Of Dorian Gray" by Oscar Wilde is a deep, mysterious, and thought provoking story. It is the story of a man by the name of Dorian whose whole life changes when he meets a pursuasive character. Dorian is influenced in such a way that he is lead to beleive in evrything that this character says. In doing so he finds himself, or rather his soul caught in a "picture" of troubles. This is a novel that is boring and yet interesting at the same time. It begins rather slow, but the excitment builds as the story progresses. The author, Oscar Wilde, uses a tremendous amount of description. We found that the amount of description both hindered and harmed the story. There was a great deal of detail in the beginning that we found superfluous and boring. However, we also found that later the detail brought the reader more into the story. For the most part we all really enjoyed this story. We would recommend it to generally everyone(unless you are not one for detail). This novel offers the reader everything; murder, mystery, thrills, chills and more! It is a well written, perplexing and enticing story that you will enjoy and remember for years to come.

Beautiful and Terrifying

The Picture of Dorian Gray is a deliciously creepy novel. Although the novel may often be romanticized, it remains solidly in the horror genre. The reader never knows whether to feel sorry for Dorian -- a handsome young man who is extremely susceptible to corrupting influences -- or to despise him for his own vanity and selfishness. There are certainly very few truly likable characters in this book with the exception of the artist, Basil Hallward. Wilde's writing, as usual, is lush, beautiful, and descriptive. The moral of the story is overt, yet deeply moving. If you've read Frank Norris' novel of realism, McTeague, perhaps you'll understand why these two very different books evoked similar feelings within me. After reading Dorian Gray, I felt melancholy -- even slightly depressed -- but I still could not put the novel down. The downward spiral of life (as in this novel and McTeague) evoked terror, yet, perhaps more importantly, it kept me strangely fascinated. Read Dorian Gray and learn something about life -- the ending is perfect and one of the most memorable scenes in literature.

Backwards Learning Russian Am I

I am one of those people alluded to by another reviewer of this book, someone who lives amidst a large number of Russian speakers. My intention in buying the dictionary was not to help me learn Russian, but to aid in building the ENGLISH vocabulary of a Ukrainian man I tutor. The book is so impeccably organized (by theme groups subdivided by topics) that it has given my student and me a good foothold on the hardest part of mastering a language, namely getting to the point where you can express abstract thinking.

With such topics as "Knowledge, Faith and the Paranormal," and "The Inner Self," it is possible to start from a ready-made vocabulary of cognates expressing the abstract and combine them with the vocabulary of concrete fact. We are thus arriving at the articulation of ideas that are part of adult thought but are nearly impossible to express in a new language or explain to someone new to English, due to a certain built-in circularity in the definitions of these concepts.

In an immersion theory of teaching ESL, of course, it is not considered advisable to converse in anything but English. This allows me not to break with that doctrine, with the added bonus that I am now beginning to recognize words in Russian. If this doesn't stop soon, I may end up as a student of my student.

A great quick resource, but...

While I understand the fact that the point of this book is to quickly bolster a student's ability to speak and understand Russian vis-a-vis applying knowledge of English to Russian cognates, many of the choices listed in this book fall into the following categories:

1) False cognates. There are numerous cases where an anglicised or latinate word is rendered into Russian incorrectly. This is confusing for Russians listening to the speaker, who do not understand exactly what the anglophone is trying to say.

2) For many of these words, recent borrowings from English exist, but the new word is generally not immediately as usable as the native Russian word. A good choice to show a Russian your wordpower, but not "очень по-русски".

Overall, this book was still helpful and did a great job of categorizing words in a logical and easily-readable manner.

Russian vocabulary

NTC's Dictionary of Russian Cognates Thematically Organized (2000), the most recent cognate compendium by Rose Nash, is at once the most complete and most useful work in its field.
Advertised as a vocabulary builder, the book has special relevance for English-Russian translators. The number of cognates is extraordinary 264 double-columed pages and the organization by themes is very easy to follow through an alphabetical listing of topics. Entries are alphabetically listed, in English, under subtopics, so items can be found quickly.
Nash's Introduction is excellent. The student-oriented orthographic and phonologic description of the Cyrillic alphabet is lucid and thorough. The sections on the nature of cognates and their use in translation are applicable to any language context.
The book is available only in paerback. This keeps the cost down but magnifies wear and tear on books subject to a lot of handling.

Hardcore description of how and why molecules move and react

An ideal reference for those intimate with the field of reacting and non-reacting "fluids". This is not a text-book for those faint-of-heart when it comes to mathematics and "techno-babble", but rather a comprehensive treatment of physical properties and interactions that govern gaseous and liquid phase molecules.

"Molecular Theory of Gases and Liquids" is unique in its cross-disciplinary approach to each aspect of molecular phenomena. Chemists, Physicists, and Engineers alike will find its content, the corresponding discussions, and at least one of the various approaches to the derivation of each concept invaluable.

Most disciplines have a text that is casually refered to as its "bible". As a physical chemist studying the interactions of high- temperature reacting fluid flows, (a glorified way of saying combustion), I heartily recommend "Molecular Theory of Gases and Liquids" to that status.

Well done, but with a fairly fatal flaw

This is, without a doubt, a well-crafted book, well-organized, well-written, full of lots of practical and useful tips. There's a couple of aspects of it, however, that detract considerably from its usefulness in my situation.

The first one is major: the anecdotes she relates, which are meant to be inspiring, are in my view actually discouraging to the teens who might read this book. Example? The girl who just couldn't figure out her "hook", then thought back, and it suddenly struck her, oh YEAH, that's right, I was a Broadway star in 9th grade, praised in reviews in the New York Times, featured on the cast album in two solos, etc. I mean, come on. My daughter, who is a top student with great test scores and great extracurriculars, is freaking out that she might not get into Yale because "everyone who gets in is a published novelist or something." The examples in this book perpetuate that myth, and make it seem like only those sorts of people will stand a chance. I bought this book for her, but luckily read it first, and now I'm not going to give it to her to read, because it will just exacerbate her concerns.

Secondly, I'd assumed that the book was focused on the college application process, which it sort of is, but much of the germane advice (good tips all) pertains to the student's whole high school career, and what they can do to position themselves. This is a book for parents of such kids, who can help encourage and enable activities and events that will help once the senior year application process begins.

Gaining admittance into the college of your choice is no easy task. With THE COLLEGE HOOK, written by Pam Proctor, the president of College Application Consultants, Inc., I have to say that your odds are greatly improved!

The book is broken down into four main parts: Discovering Your Hook, The Top Ten College Hooks, Packaging Your Hook, and Selling Your Hook. Each main category is then broken down into smaller, more-manageable sections, such as Hooks That Worked, The Resume Power Play, and Acing the Interview.

I know you're asking yourself: "What in the world, exactly, is the college hook?" According to Ms. Proctor, it's pretty simple: it's "that one special interest that will cause admissions officials to salivate over an application and significantly increase the odds of getting into a favorite college."

Basically, colleges are looking for that unique "something" that makes you you - that "something" that will make their college a better college, and will make them sorry if they don't accept you! But to find your hook, you have to find the strengths and weaknesses in yourself, and that's not always an easy task. But THE COLLEGE HOOK stresses the importance of doing just that, and The Top Ten College Hooks (including Athletic, International, Music, Political, Technology, Humanitarian, Science, Writing, Drama, and Multicultural) go a long way in helping you figure out your personal hook before you begin the college admissions process.

This is a must-read for teens getting ready to begin sending out those college applications. From writing an interesting, professional resume to acing your admissions interview, everything about the application process is covered.

I love this book

I admit to being a bit obsessive, so I do own every college guide printed. This is my favorite book, because it really does give amazing advice for helping a child define themselves. This book has paid forward by giving my child more self confidence. He never knew he had so many strengths before we started applying the techniques in this book. I suggest that the sophmore year is a good starting place for this book, it does take time to steer the academic resume into a comprehensive picture.
This isn't about selling out to the system either...we haven't compromised even a little in pursuing his direct interests. We just added another piece or two, such as being the school board student representative, that he might not otherwise have considered. I think that what is the most remarkable is the way the administration at his high school has responded to a teenager who has a comprehensive plan. They see him as a star, someone who shows leadership. He responds to their admiration by working even harder at his projects. it's a win-win.
