Plot issues...not the best in series

I really do like this series. It does have its issues especially with plot holes. I also thought at the end that when she passed out we dont know what happened and neither does she. Its explained by the other characters. Why would it be done that way? Thats just weird. I mean on some level in books the main character kinda has the gist but the ending of this was just odd. Also, this started out pretty smoothly but then slowed down and the pace sped up again. A little up and down there.

I liked Simone but sometimes she grated on me on how much she flipped out over the small stuff. She's got a horrid history with her husband who's supposedly dead at her hand. She's got a traumatized little girl...Glory which I wish there was more interaction with her. I dont know if its because she wasnt willing to speak or what. That shouldnt negate her role in the book. Her big lesson in this book is your past can come back and bite you in the ass!

Brady is from book 4 and I dunno if its just me...he seemed more intimidating in book 4 than this one. He seemed like a teddy bear in this one. Not that its necessarily a bad thing but noticeable. He's sweet and has had a bit of a thing for Simone the moment he met her. He plays Candy Land with Glory and is often there when he's needed. So...a total white knight. Of course I wanted to bash his head in when Simone is taken and dumped back off and he treats her like a damn criminal. Yeesh really? He was supposed to have her back and trust her like she trusted him and is an ass to her at that point. Thats before he knew she was taken by the psycho group he used to belong to. So...yeah that so didnt justify that and I am wondering why she let him off the hook for it. Like I said plot holes are a big issue with this book and probably some of the others in this series.

I dont know if this series got big too fast for the author and she didnt consider how the plot or books didnt make sense in some parts? I dont know but hopefully the next is better. I'm about halfway through the series and the amount we're all spending on these books I think they should be done better. Or decrease the price on some of the older ones. 7-8 dollars per book that have constant issues is hard to swallow, but we continue to purchase them because we like them enough or we want to know what happens to the characters. I do think I'll be taking a break and not order the next one just yet.

What I Loved: The furthering of the story of the community of Broken Heart OK. I am really loving how the elements are coming together and the community is really bonding together. The "wish" was probably my favorite moment in the book because it really was funny but I think great for the town.

What I Liked: Simone and Braddock had a really sweet story. I think they both felt a little bit like they didn't belong but it was fun to watch how they ended up belonging like everyone else.

Complaints: None really! This wasn't my favorite book in the series but it was still a really fun read.

Why I gave it a 3: This book was a great continuation of the story of Broken Heart but it just wasn't my favorite. That being said, do not skip it--Simone and Braddock are a really good couple and you will miss some "plot" forwards. Well worth the time it took to read!

Who I would recommend it too: PNR readers who have read the rest of the series. It really is one of those fun series that just make you smile!

This story line is one of my favorites in recent years. I have gotten the books as soon as possible and read them within a day of receiving them. I love them. I love that each book shows us more characters from this sleepy little town. Id love to live there, the occupants make me laugh. This series is not smutty and doesn't do blood or gore. It would be appropriate for a younger audience. I love it. Thanks.

A Great Sendoff For Sleator

Bestselling author and delighter of many children's minds, William Sleator, returns with Ann Monticone - after collaborating on Test - in likely his last novel, The Phantom Limb. While Sleator sadly passed away earlier this year, The Phantom Limb is a fantastic send off, employing some of his great story telling with a truly terrifying and unforgettable plot.

Isaac is the new boy in town, who dreads each day going to school and having to deal with a bullying pair of twins and all sorts of ridicule. Friendless, he enjoys what time he can at home, entertained with his growing collection of optical illusions. His mother is ill with a mysterious sickness, permanently in the hospital, while Isaac is lonely at home, tending after his grandfather who may be suffering from dementia. As he begins to get used to the new house, he finds a leftover item from the previous tenants, an optical illusion in fact: a mirror box that is designed for amputees as it creates the illusion of a second limb.

As Isaac spends his time visiting his mother, she seems to be growing sicker and sicker, instead of getting better and yet the doctors and nurses don't seem to know what's wrong with her. Isaac starts to suspect that someone at the hospital may be intentionally making her sicker. As for the mirror box, he has noticed something special about it: there's an additional limb in there - a phantom limb - that appears only before him. It seems to be trying to tell him something, but Isaac will have to work out who this phantom limb belongs to, who the previous tenants were, and how they are linked with the hospital and its suspicious staff. But Isaac will stop at nothing, because his mother's life depends on it.

Sleator does what he does best in The Phantom Limb, revealing an incredible story that grows and becomes more and more bizarre, with the fantastic and the unbelievable; and yet Sleator keeps the reader reading along, linking plot lines and tangents, bringing them all together in a logical conclusion that will leave the reader astounded.

About the Author

Victoria Stacey has been a Consultant in Emergency Medicine at Cheltenham General Hospital since August 2009. She passed the MCEM examination in 2004 and the FCEM examination in 2008. She trained as a Specialist Registrar in the Oxford Deanery and during that time ran a revision course for the MCEM part B and C examinations. She has prepared hundreds of candidates for the MCEM examination as part of teaching on the revision course and in her role as an Educational Supervisor. She has experienced firsthand the problem many candidates have of finding resources to help prepare for the exams and have been asked numerous times to recommend books that candidates can use to revise. She wrote the revision guide for the MCEM Part B examination to help address this need. In writing the revision guide she has tried to create the book she wished she had when preparing for the MCEM and FCEM examinations.

Excellent review

I have just started reading this book, so far looks very simple and easy to memorize. Flow chart and tables are well constructed and SAQ at the end of chapter are bonus.I hope this will fulfill the purpose to pass MCEM B in first attempt :)
I would have given it five, but quality of printing needs to improve as there are no color diagrams in the book.

Easy. Simple. On-Target

Spencer Johnson's books are not profound but they can be life-changing. Sometimes people who can help the most cut through the clutter and verbiage we can get bogged down in and get to the heart of the matter. Johnson does this in his simple, narrative books and One Minute for Yourself is no different nor no less effective.
Can you imagine having 365 minutes to yourself a year? Can you imagine what you can do for yourself in sixty seconds of silence and peace? Most people don't or even believe that short of a time period can make a difference...but it's true. Johnson cuts through the garbage we pile on ourselves from self-help gurus and shows you how easy it can be.
Some days I take a minute for myself. Others, I dive into my work and stay immersed there. It's easy to look back and see my most effective days and my most overwhelming days. Taking a minute to reflect, to dream or just to relax makes a big difference in my daily effectiveness. As a matter of fact, I think I'll take one now...

Thought-Provoking and Straightforward

This book is the second I have read in the One Minute series. Once the reader grows accustomed to the parable presentation, the principles are much easier to grasp. The author in this volume interestingly defines selfishness as neglect of self.
There are three basic concepts promoted: take care of me, take care of others, and take care of the relationship I have with others. Johnson asserts that a person is most loving when his own needs have been adequately addressed. He feels that self-denial is destructive to ourselves and others, rather than helpful.
Jesus encourages us to "love others as we love ourselves." Based upon this admonition, there is a biblical basis for what the author is stating. Until we love ourselves and give attention to our own needs and desires, we are not truly free to love. Once we have taken "one minute" to look inward and assess our own needs, then we are much better equipped to relate to the persons around us.
This book is an easy read -- I finished it in one sitting. If you have been raised to think that self-denial is always good and self-indulgence is always bad, I encourage you to read this volume. For the price, the insights gained are well worth the money spent.

I really enjoy the One Minute management series and was looking forward to reading this. Save your $$. The take home message is you must take care of yourself before you can take care of others.

Excellent Book

Readers of Andrew's books will find a wealth of cumulative knowledge within this package. You will find notes from a number of different teaching series including the Believer's Authority, God Wants You Well, Balance Between Grace and Faith, Financial Stewardship, and so forth. The content of the book is not purely philosophical or analytical. The book provides practical advice that will help you discover God's promise. First, you must realize that god's will is not difficult to find. All you have to do is locate a need and fulfill it. The desire will grow in you as you commit yourself to follow God's will. Next, the book introduces how God always supplies resources for his people. He did not require perfect people. God wants people to obey his will by free choice. The book was focused on the third concept, "How to fulfill God's will". Most Christians will not endure this phase because they have not made up their minds. Andrew's comments guides Christians to recognize their position as a steward.

Example: Andrew needed money. He got a job painting a house. Sickness entered into his body. Andrew agreed with the sickness and left the workplace. He went home and rested. His wife told him to get up and work. She got him up and convinced him to dance until the symptoms left his body. The dancing worked. He went back to work that evening. The moral of the story was Andrew had to learn to be tenacious. He knew God had already healed him. Andrew needed to act on his faith. The enemy was able to put sickness in his body because he left open a door.

quibbles and caveats

I found it to be a good book even if I found things I could quibble over. The first sentence in the second paragraph says, "You are not going to accidentally fulfill God's will." I could quibble over that sentence. Wommack says at one point he has stopped arguing over the existence of God. I found the things in this book that I could quibble over to be not really worth the effort to quibble over.
If this book was on how to find your Mr./Ms. Right now ; it would make a difference if you were a young adult, or a middle aged adult, or a senior adult. I found much of value in this book ; but ended up feeling that I wished I had been able to read this decades ago. And the truth is that decades ago I probably wouldn't have gotten out of it what I like to tell myself that I would have, because decades ago my head was in a different space. At 18, I was nowhere close to standing up and telling the whole church how God had changed me ; likely because it had not happened.
Andrew Wommack has a series on this subject going over the television. I like the book. It feels solid ; not "phoned in".
The first chapter is the longest chapter in the book. If you're inclined to set a book down ; be forewarned.
In the second chapter, I enjoyed Wommack's thoughts on GPS. And, also on second chances.
Chapters 3 and 4 covered the important concepts of becoming a living sacrifice, and renewing one's mind. One interesting thought is that God doesn't see us as a disposable commodity ; He loves us more than He loves what we can do for Him. And also, thoughts about how Christians today can be surprisingly kind of like unbelievers in the way they experience the world around themselves.
Of course, there's got to be some work involved, and Chapters 7, 8, 11, and 12 cover that.
I particularly liked(and needed to read) Chapter 10 on the Holy Spirit.
Interestingly, I believe Wommack has done some discussion on imagination on television earlier this year. The last chapter of the book goes over this. It is interesting stuff. I like to think I could use it in an adult Sunday school setting. However, I suspect that if readers are going to feel challenged, it will probably be by this last chapter. But, the good thing is by that point they should have already gotten a lot of value from the book.
Basically, I found it to be a good book by an author who has had a long walk in the faith.

Easy to read (I couldn't put it down) and understand. It was all scriptural with Bible verses to support each idea. Very well written and easy to apply to everyday life. A great add to my library. I love Andrew Wommack!

Of all the books about South Africa’s 21-year ‘Border War’ - fought on both sides of Angola’s frontier with present-day Namibia - South Africa’s Border War has always been rated as among the best. A significant, full-color volume, it originally sold 31,000 copies in South Africa alone and has been out of print for decades.

This version is the first reissue of the original, written by Willem Steenkamp. Almost all the photos were taken by Al J. Venter who covered that conflict intermittently for almost two decades.

Both Steenkamp and Venter have gone on to produce other works on that bitter conflict, but neither they nor anybody else has been able to match this beautiful coffee-table volume. Both agree that the book should be regarded as a tribute to a generation of fighting men, where sons often followed in the footsteps of their fathers, serving in the same units a generation apart.

Though South Africa’s ‘Border War’ started slowly with the first major clash of the conflict taking place on South West African soil at Omugulugwombashe in August 1966, hostilities escalated steadily, to the point where Moscow provided the Marxist Luanda government with all the military hardware it needed. Tens of thousands of Cuban troops were drafted into Angola after Portugal had abandoned its African territories.

The conflict then entered several conventional phases that involved long-range South African armored strikes into Angola’s interior and several major tank battles that eventually brought hostilities to an end. Luanda by then had already used chemical weapons on a limited scale and Pretoria was considering deploying its newly developed nuclear arsenal.

Willem Steenkamp, a seasoned war correspondent, covers all these historical issues in South Africa’s Border War, as well as ancillary military strikes in several other black African countries that included Zambia and Mozambique.

The book is exceptionally well illustrated, with hundreds of color as well as black-and-white photos; truly a valuable addition to recent African military history.

This book is a re-issue of a popular nineteen-nineties publication regarding the decades-long South African border war with what is now called Namibia. Journalist Willem Steenkamp and photojournalist Al J. Venter cover all aspects of the evolving conflict from 1966 to 1989. The text is broken up into two parts covering the war’s beginning and ending, and the war in close-up. Throughout, the journalists concern themselves not only with the troops fighting the war, but the environment and indigenous peoples caught in the crossfire of a war that received backing from the Soviet Union on one side and saw the involvement of Cuba, the use of chemical weapons, and the contemplated use of South Africa’s newly created nuclear arsenal.

The truth about th war in Southern Africa

This is one of the best books ever written on South Africa's military involvement in Southern Africa. It reveals more about the battles fought by South Africa's army, than most people are aware of. It has an indepth coverage from 1966 to 1989. Along with special sections on relevant military units like The South African "Recces" special forces, and 32 batalion both renown for their abilities in battle. There are also sections on the political decision making taking place, amongst various relevant parties. The numerous photos that can be seen throughout the book are very impressive in what they convey. In essence what it was like to be there. The South African Defence Force constantly fought against overwhelming odds, yet always rising to the task, and consistently coming out as winners.
I highly recommend this book for anymore who wants really know about, and understand the conflicts the SADF fought in, with courage and tenacity....

Outstanding Account of the war along the South West / Angolan border

As the previous reviewer stated, this has got to be absolutely one of the best books written on South Africa's military involvement in South West Afrika (Namibia) and Angola. Most non-South Africans (and even many South African's these days) are unaware of just how intense and prolonged the fighting was, particularly in Angola against the Cubans (the South African's trashed them). This book tells the complete story, covering the period from 1966 to 1989. It covers the battles, the units (including special forces units like the Recces) as well as the politics.

The book is a large coffee-table format and going with the size, it includes an absolutely outstanding range of photos. I've got friends who were there, they've browsed through this book and said "ag nie manne, that was what it was like!" One of my friends was based in a military outpost photo'd in the book and he pointed out all the camp's features from the photo. It's that kind of book - if you get a chance to pick up a copy, grab it with both hands and your feet as well - it's worth it. And the author knows what he's talking about, he was there.

Remembering a forgotten war

For thiry-three years, South african forces waged a sometimes savage war in one of the most forgotten places of the world. Despite the general lack of interest from outside world,the war verged upon such "minor" subjects like the east-west conflict, the dominance over one of the richest countries in the world (a leading exporter of such trifles as gold and diamonds) and last but not least, the rightness of a country in separating its citizens by race... All this taking into account the colossal scope -geographically as well as chronologically- of this conflict.
Despite all these factors, the "south africa border war" is one of the most overlooked conflicts by the serious student of contemporary military history. Thankfully, this book comes to solve this problem. It is not the definitive book on the subject but it is a coureagous and articulated work which tries to give a general survey of the issue. In that aspect, mr. Steenkamp succeds reasonably well: the book has a reasonable structure and offers a wealth of graphic documentation, and despite the fact of the writer having fought in this war, it is a quite unprejudiced book which offers a balanced point of view about this protracted war. However more raw military data (please more TOEs and orders of battle) as well as a bibliography would have enriched the book.
At this respect, the writer (as well as those readers with an interest on the subject of the modern african wars) should have as a reference the excellent volume -regrettably written only in portuguese- about the colonial wars of this county in Africa:"Os anos da guerra colonial" by Aniceto Afonso and Carlos de Matos Gomes.

The Best Holmes Novel

This is probably the best of the Holmes novels. Like all of them (and the short stories) it is near impossible to put down, and leaves you awestruck at Holmes's genius. Doyle's writing style is extremely impressive as always, his characters seem so very real! This book is believable, a true masterpiece of mystery literature, and in the top tier of the long list of the great English detective stories. It just doesn't get any better than this. Even the long section without Holmes and Watson in it ("The Scowers") is enjoyable to read, and not boring (unlike the Mormon part in a Study In Scarlet). Highly reccommended.

Easily the second best Holmes Novel - Wonderful Read!!!

The Sherlock Holmes canon includes a total of 60 stories from the original author, AC Doyle. Of the 60, only four were full novels including this one. The rest are short stories published in five books, totaling 9 books. The first two stories penned by Doyle were the novels, Study in Scarlet (where Holmes and Watson first meet), and A Sign of the Four (which includes Watson meeting his wife). This is followed by short stories in book 3, the Adventures of SH. Ideally the stories are best read in order, but not critical. Unlike the rest of the canon, the two novels, Hound of the Baskervilles and Valley of Fear, can be read at any time - especially since they each defy the chronology. Hound was written about 8 years after the short story, The Final Solution, when Holmes died in a mortal struggle with the Napoleon of crime, Professor Moriarty, who was also killed. (But, Holmes doesn't die and is brought back, very cleverly and very credibly, 10 years later, in the story, The Empty House, written 2 years after Hound. Anyway, 10 years after all that Doyle wrote, The Valley of Fear - which is one of two stories that include Prof Moriarty - this is not a spoiler to the story and the Prof is only talked about in present tense. I guess my point is, this novel, and Hound of the Baskervilles can be read at any time whereas everything else is slightly better if read in order. Okay, enough of the background on the canon.

Valley of Fear is simply a great read with wonderful twists at the end that the reader will not likely see coming. I would put Valley and Hound as the two best novels, with Hound perhaps slightly better, but better is all about taste and preference. Anyway, this novel is broken down into two main parts, Part 1 is the Murder mystery, who killed...? Part 2 is a backstory, about 20 years earlier and has nothing to do with Sherlock Holmes. The part 2 story provides the motivation for the murder mystery in part 1. This format is the same as found in the first two novels but the backstory here is probably the best of the three - Doyle now has almost 30 years of writing experience. There is a very short part 3, the Epilogue which brings us back to Baker Street for a final update.

The Valley of Fear part 1 mystery the reader gets most of the clues the same time as Holmes does and is more or less free to try to figure things out himself but as I mentioned, there are twists and nothing in Valley of Fear is what it seems!!!! One noticeable difference for myself, who has now read 7 of the 9 books, and possibly fellow Sherlockians, is that the deep friendship between Holmes and Watson is just not there. The first page was almost disturbing in that regard. Watson is more of an object then a subject to Holmes, more like the modern adaptations. It's just something that jumped out at me since other than the Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Granada Television Series series, which is extremely faithful to the original stories, Holmes and Watson have a deep personal friendship and respect. Watson is a friend, gentlemen, medic, soldier, and chronicler - not the bumbling sidekick of the Basil Rathbone movies. Anyway, the story, both part 1 and 2, are excellent and much better than I expected. Highly recommended.

"Am I never going to get out of the Valley of Fear?"

The last of the four complete Sherlock Holmes novels written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Valley of Fear gives the reader two plots for the price of one. More accustomed to writing short stories than well-developed novels, Doyle creates two story lines, only loosely connecting them. He then throws Moriarty, the arch-villain, into the mix, though Moriarty was killed off in a previous novel.

In the first plot, which directly involves Sherlock Holmes, a letter warns, in code, that something dreadful will happen at Birlstone, an ancient manor house surrounded by a forty-foot moat. Before Holmes can act, however, the owner, Jack Douglas, is found shot to death, his face destroyed in the blast from a sawed-off shotgun. Douglas was an American, and the nature of his death and the weapon "proves" to the local police that the killer was also an American. As Holmes investigates, with the help of Scotland Yard, the mystery deepens. Douglas always raised the drawbridge at night, the moat was too big to leap, and there were no strangers in the house. Gradually, Holmes uncovers Douglas's background in America.

In the second plot, a group of coal miners belonging to a secret society welcome a new member, Jack McMurdo, someone accused of murder in Chicago who needed to escape someplace where no one knew him. His lodge has recommended that he go to the Vermissa plain, "the Valley of Fear," and see Boss McGinty, the Bodymaster of the lodge there. McGinty and his men belong to a group which wreaks havoc on the community when it believes injustices have occurred. Seemingly above the law, they have avoided being caught, though rumor has it that a Pinkerton man has been sent to unmask the members of the group. Holmes plays little or no part in this whole section.

The two plots have seemingly little in common, except that the dead man from Part I is branded with the mark of the lodge of miners. The second part, about the lodge of miners, provides the motivation for the murder of Douglas in the first part. It is too bad that Doyle did not separate these two stories, since the story of the miners, though not involving Holmes, could have been developed as a powerful "one-off." It is a story filled with all the ingredients of great fiction--even including a love story--a dramatic and relevant mystery with connections to the social issues of the day. For anyone interested in watching a writer try to bridge the gap between short stories and novels, this "novel," though fun, shows the errors of using two plots with too little integration of ideas. n Mary Whipple
