About the Author

Martin Loosemore is Professor and Associate Dean Research at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia, a Chartered Surveyor, Chartered Builder and Principal of a management consultancy LRC. Martin has published numerous books and articles in the areas of risk management, crisis management and human resource management.

John Raftery is Professor, Dean of the School of the Built Environment and Pro-Vice Chancellor (External Affairs), Oxford Brookes University, Oxford, UK. He has published many articles and books in the areas of risk management and construction economics and recently co-edited The Construction Sector in the Asian Economies.

Charlie Reilly is Deputy Managing Director, Multiplex Facilities Management Limited and a Chartered Professional Engineer.

Dave Higgon is the Employee Relations Manager for Multiplex Constructions NSW. He has over 30 years experience in the building and construction industry including time spent as a subcontractor, trade union organiser and safety manager .

About the Author
Rose Wilder Lane was the daughter of Laura Ingalls Wilder, author of the beloved Little House books. She was born in 1886 on a homestead claim in the Dakota Territory, similar to the one she describes in this novel.

Dan Andreasen has illustrated many well-loved books for children, including River Boy: The Story of Mark Twain and Pioneer Girl: The Story of Laura Ingalls Wilder, both by William Anderson, as well as many titles in the Little House series. He lives with his family in Medina, Ohio.

There is a reason....

There is a reason that Rose Wilder Lane, once a hugely famous journalist and novelist, is now largely remembered as an afterthought when her mother, Laura Ingalls Wilder is mentioned. After reading claims, that Rose took a more than 'editorial' part in her mother's Little House series, and then finding out that this was book was somewhat modeled after her grandparents, Charles and Caroline Ingalls, I had to read it. Luckily, this one is still often reprinted. Here are my thoughts, however educated or not so, they may be: I think this book was tremendously interesting. I startled time and again reading things like "Wild Plum Creek", and about the grasshopper plagues, so familiar from Laura's "On the Banks of Plum Creek". I was suprised (in almost a good way) to read about some of the harsher things that Molly (as she is called in this version) had to do to survive. We definately wouldn't read about some those gory aspects in a Little House book. I actual could have really liked this book if it weren't for the way it was written. Rose's plot line was great (the ending was too abrupt though). But there was absolutely no personalizing her characters here at all. This read like history...this happened and this happened. Oh, and they were madly in love. I never felt like they were madly in love, except for the fact that Rose tells me so in the book once in awhile. In Laura's stories I feel the love between Pa and Ma, in his 'twinkling' eyes as he looks on her..as his first thoughts are usually things to do to make Ma happier wherever they settle. You can feel the love between parents and child(ren) in Laura's books as well. In the soft words, Pa and Ma speak to comfort the children. In the ways Pa and Ma think of their children as they try to soften the blows so frequently felt from the prairie.

There is none of that in Young Pioneers. This story is kind of bland. I think this should be an example pointing to the fact that Rose Wilder Lane perhaps (most certainly in fact) edited her mother's stories, and its never been a secret that she typed up Laura's handwritten manuscripts, but Rose Wilder Lane's writing style would have had to completely changed, to have had a serious authorship of the Little House books.

Could Have Been So Much More

You have to feel sorry for Rose Wilder Lane: at one point, SHE was the famous author in the family. In her lifetime, she wrote over 20 books, and countless magazine and newspaper articles. She wrote biographies of Henry Ford, Herbert Hoover, and Charlie Chaplin. She is considered one of the founders of the Libertarian movement.

Now? She's mainly relegated to being "the daughter of Laura Ingalls Wilder." She's a footnote in the sad chapter of "The First Four Years."

My daughter and I have been reading a series of books written about Rose, in the style of the Little House books, by her "adopted grandson" and heir, Roger Lea MacBride (although he died after a few books were written, and his own daughter finished them, from what I understand.) And of course, there is "A Wilder Rose", the new novel about the relationship between Laura and Rose. This is the first of her books that I have read.

You'll notice in the Amazon synopsis that the main characters are named Molly and David. I'm not sure when this was changed (probably when the title was - and it suddenly became a children's book, which I find very odd...) but originally the characters were named Charles and Caroline. Sound familiar? Let the Hurricane Roar was originally published as a magazine serial, and then as a novel, and borrowed heavily from the stories that she had grown up hearing from the Ingalls side of her family. There is a grasshopper plague, and blinding blizzards, and cattle frozen to the ground by their own breath. Anyone who has read the Little House books will be very aware of the similarities. It's been said that her mother gave her permission to use the stories, but I'm not certain if that's known for sure; although I suppose at the time she didn't ever expect to continue the Little House books (Little House in the Big Woods was also published in 1932) to the point where the similarities would be noticed.

But taking aside comparisons to her mother's books (in which, it has been alleged, Rose had more than an editorial hand - but don't get me started on that one), the story is interesting, but perhaps because it is such a short book (only around 150 pages in the version that I read) I never felt much of a connection to the characters. When a tragedy struck, as a reader I should have felt for them, or wondered what they would possibly do, but I just never did. I didn't dislike the book at all, but I just never was able to love it, either. I think if it had taken more time for character development it would be more compelling.

Honestly, after reading this, I have a very hard time believing that Rose wrote her mother's books.

I couldn't put it down.

I went into reading this book not sure what to expect. It was reflective of the Little House books, but I was instantly hooked by the suspense of the plot and the events. Although this was meant for children, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I am a huge fan of all the Little House books, and this one just earned a spot on my bookshelf.

It's rare to find a book written by someone who has been in the trenches that effectively articulates the nuances of governance and the impact specifically of focusing on data governance. Jim Orr does an exceptional job of highlighting the value of data governance in this book. More importantly, it is an easy read for anyone who is in a managerial and executive role.

While companies have made huge investments in their IT infrastructure systems and technology, very few enterprises have focused on how to extract impactful value from the basic asset that these technology investments were meant to harness, manage and govern - DATA. In this book, Mr. Orr lays out practical approaches to data governance. A must-read for executives...

Makes sense to me

I bought this book because the author is a shirt tail relation(ha). Having worked at the bottom rung of two major corporations, GM , Home Depot, I have found communication among all players involved to be at best, almost nonexistant. As a future product specialist , it would take me days to get an answer to a simple question because of all the different parties involved. I soon realized that I could get an answer to the same question if I had all parties in the same room at the same time in 15 minutes or less. Go figure. Jims ideas and concepts are clear, and most importantly havr common sense, which in my mind is most important.

It says for "executives" but it is really for anyone interested in learning about "Data Governance" - one of today's most critcal business issues. As an IT professional I have always found it difficult to find the right words to explain important issues that are immersed in technology to business people. James C. Orr does an excellent job at exactly that. If you are like me and enjoy gobbling up books on key issues that affect your organization then don't miss this book.

The Costumer's Handbook (1980), the bible of theatrical costumers, has been out of print for a while. It is resurrected here in a much expanded version as two essential reference/hand/text books, one for designers and one for technicians. Both are superbly illustrated and contain both an extensive annotated bibliography and a lengthy shopping guide. The Designer's Handbook follows the process from script to production, also offering contains a chapter on the profession. The Technician's Handbook begins with setting up a costume shop and goes on to such topics as safety, fabrics, pattern-making, con struction, fitting, dyeing, and sections on hair, hats, and accessories. Both titles are required purchases for theater collections.

Excellent!

It is amazing that someone could leave a negative review of a book because it was "not what [they] were looking for", when the description of the book states exactly what it's about. It is not a pattern book. It is not a book full of historical costume pictures. It is a book for theatrical costume designers, going over the process of theatrical costume design from start to finish, and it is very good & thorough. Extremely helpful, especially if you're just starting out in costuming for productions of any size!

I didn't know where to start until someone lent me this book

I'd been assisting designers for quite some time, even designed some of my own shows, without an education in costume design. I have lots of great experience but I'm sure nothing can compete with a costume design education (mine is in fashion design), which I'd like to pursue when I have the time. I'm so glad I found out about this book! Every aspect of the process you need to know about is in here. It is essential! I can't believe I survived as long as I did without it.

Well, this was surprising!

I'm starting to really get into the "Midnight Matings" series. This one was quirky and unpredictable. The legendary phoenix is accidentally mated to another magical being. The sex is "scorching" but the story isn't taken over by it. For those of you who read a lot of who-done-its, you'll figure out who the bad guy is fairly quickly. Not to worry, this is still entertaining.

Twenty five years ago the Great War decimated paranormal society. At this Great Gathering in Scotland the Elders announce to everyone that they are tired of the squabbles between the various species. Taking matters into their own hands the Elders have cast a spell to insure mating will occur for everyone there. They have 24 hours to find a mate or suffer grave consequences.

As Asher Deacon hears the Elders decision he decides to leave and take his chances. Dodging and weaving his way out of the ballroom Asher can't help noticing the tall, hot blonde fighting off unwelcome suitors. Zaiden Reed, a sprite manages to get out of the room and finds a like minded soul in Asher. But before they can figure out a way to leave the castle the mating heat takes hold and mates Zaiden to the sexy little phoenix.

Choosing to make the best of a difficult situation, especially after they suffer from not reading the Elder's written instructions, Asher and Deacon begin to realize that fate might have done them a favor. Unfortunately it seems that someone else isn't so happy with their mating when their home is vandalized and threats are sent. The fragile bond they were forming is unraveling before Zaiden and Asher's eyes. If the culprit isn't found soon this mating will end in disaster.

Fire and Ash is a character driven suspense filled love story. Strong willed Asher and sensible Zaiden are a well matched pair who are nudged into a mating they didn't want, yet fate knew they were meant to be. Regardless of the paranormal aspect they are a balanced couple falling in love when trouble strikes. Fiery Asher handles their problems better than the normally level headed Zaiden. There are interesting twists and turns between the mates and their nemesis. Tensions build and dangers heighten for the lovers in Fire and Ash. Entertaining from start to finish.

Too many of the pathology books get written with a lot of verbose dialogue. With all the information that you need to know, having a bullet pointed list of absolute facts is nice without having to sift for them. Great for taking notes in too. Think I may get the whole series.

Wonderful French grammar exercise book - recommended by my teacher in France!

This book is very appropriate for my level of French (I took no French in high school or college and I began learning French in 2008 at the College for Seniors in Asheville). In October 2015, I took a 1-week French immersion class in the Basque region of France, and this is the exercise book that my French teacher used. Everything is in French -- all instructions and exercises -- and everything is easy to understand. My husband, who is an advanced French student, said he wished that he had had this book when he was in his immersion class there, too. We plan on sharing "MY" book! Great review and explanations for: verbs (including the dreaded subjonctif), adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, direct and indirect objects, time (depuis, pour, pendant, en), and MORE! I'm very glad that I was able to locate this book online!!

The most valuable French language series available

The Grammaire Progressive du Francais series from CLE offers clear, concise and useful information, organized in a systematic way. The books are written completely in French, and build a foundation for successful communication in this beautiful and expressive language. It is particularly useful to learn how to think about grammar and literacy from the perspective of the French speaker, as opposed to trying to apply English (or your native language) rules to French. The "Grammaire Bleue," as it's nicknamed by Alliance Francaise teachers, is suitable for a language learner who has completed some high school level French. (Grammaire Jaune is for absolute beginners, and those who have strong foundation skills and want to improve their fluency can move directly to the Grammaire Verte). If you are buying this for self-study, make sure you buy the corrections book as well (Corriges) as they are sold separately. The initial exercises may seem easy, but by completing one set (reading grammar points page and doing a page of related exercises) per day, in order, you will significantly improve your abilities in three months. As a companion, working the exercises in the CLE Vocabulaire Progressive series will aide you in improving your everyday vocabulary in a cultural context.

French is my second language, which I speak to my children and use in social contexts every day. I've found that working the exercises in various books published by CLE to be quite valuable over the years in improving my written communications skills and my vocabulary.

For those who are studying French on their own, a word of advice: there's no substitute for conversation! Working the exercises in the Grammaire series will build confidence and increase fluency. However, taking a group class, taking private lessons, joining a conversation group or making a new francophone friend will force you to put those new skills to use in a practical way. Bonne chance!

This book compiles exercises that are seemingly easy but watch out! You need an additional book that has the answers that my friend bought. I study with 2 other friends. We do the exercises on our own, then get together to read them and correct them. I would recommend this book in conjunction with conversation, writing and reading additional material in french.

They meant their classification to be an anti-DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of mental disorders). Just like the DSM was essentially a classification of what prevents humans from thriving, their 24 character strengths were a classification of what allows human beings to flourish.
- 8 well-written stories that illustrates character strengths in actions. The protagonists are kids and the settings and themes are mostly school-related. Each story ends with prompts for reflection and an explanations of the strengths highlighted in the story.
- a series of activities to help kids engage with their strengths: from strength-spotting to strength-missions.
- then, my favorite part. A reference section. It is so rare to see a self-help (educational) book for the general public with academic references that I almost cried :)

Recommended to anyone who wants to get a basic understanding of character strengths, one of the key concepts of positive psychology.

What's Right? This book!

Explore realistic scenarios with the Go Strengths! characters in book form with this practical addition to the online animated happiness and resilience program. Recommended for educators, parents or practitioners working with older elementary kids and above. Easy to follow workbook materials designed for adults and realistic stories for kids. Resources for learning more about strengths and research are included in the introductory and afterward portions (the adult stuff) with the engaging stories and strengths missions in between (the kid stuff). Don't miss bonus materials and answers to activities.

Empowering kids to develop strength of character

This book makes you think about "negativity bias", a concept explained by the author as one where we humans are hard-wired to respond to negative events more so than positive ones. An unfortunate consequence of this tendency is the impact on our children.

It can be a struggle for children and young adults to find their own inner strengths and make good choices, especially when confronted with peer pressure, in-your-face social media and the need for social validation. This book is a step in the direction of "what's right".

The author uses engaging vignettes to illustrate the character traits we would like to foster in our children. The activities and "missions" suggested by the author are also excellent for developing and applying the core positive strengths.

If this book is to be put to its best use, it would be as a read-aloud with your child. Use it as a talking point to identify desirable actions and consequences.

Can a child use the material on his or her own? Perhaps. A young middle-grader can certainly understand the material, but the value in this book is the positive dialogue that it invites between parent and child or teacher and student.

Highly recommend.
