About the Author
Allan Robbins, B.Sc., M.Sc., was an instructor at Red River College in Winnipeg, Manitoba, where he taught numerous courses in the Electrical/Electronic Engineering Technology Department prior to his retirement. He has served both as section chair and treasurer of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and as treasurer of the Electronics Industry Association of Manitoba. Robbins is also a former director of training, industrial applications, for Microelectronics Center. He holds bachelor and master of science degrees in electrical engineering.

Mr. Chartrand holds a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from Queen¿s university in Kingston Ontario. He has been teaching digital courses for 20 years at Niagara College in Welland , Ontario. Mr. Chartrand has made industry contributions with various designs including interfacing an infrared camera to a PC, creating a digital circuit board used as a PC training system, and designing a control pendant for an air-filled medical bed. He also worked as a plant engineer for General Motors.

Wilhelm Miller, Dipl T, B.Sc., taught numerous courses in the Electrical/Electronic Engineering Technology Department at Red River College in Winnipeg, Manitoba, where he also served as chair of the department. Miller has served as president of the Certified Technicians and Technologists Association of Manitoba (CTTAM) and is currently chair of the Canadian Technology Accreditation Board (CTAB). He holds a diploma of technology in electronics and a bachelor of science degree in physics/mathematics.

Outstanding introduction to stat phys

I highly recommend this book. It is accessible to new comers, provides crystal clear, yet fairly rigorous explanations of difficult topics and - most importantly - it clarifies the simple probabilistic reasoning that is at the heart of statistical physics. Without the underlying framework of probability theory, many concepts in statistical physics seem to emerge from thin air and thus become difficult to grasp. The author has well understood this, and uses appropriate probabilistic explanations to great advantage.

Great book on the topic

I find this a really helpful book on the topic. Zuckerman is a great teacher in this format, and the book is well written and interesting. He has a carefully chosen concrete example (butane) that he revisits again and again to illustrate different points. The range of topics considered is good, and this is material that is not necessarily easily found in a single other book. I also like Dill's Molecular Driving Forces, which deals with statistical thermodynamics, but this is a somewhat more advanced and more thorough treatment that deals with a different set of material. Dill's book is great for what it is, but this is too. Honestly, I really need to have both books on my shelf. I'd be more comfortable using this for a graduate level class than Dill's book, which is often more introductory.

Anyway, this isn't a review of the Dill book -- the comparison is just to say that that's the only other book I'm aware of that's really at all comparable, and the two are for different audiences. This is for a more advanced audience (though not to say too advanced -- a talented undergraduate or beginning graduate student can understand it easily) and is perhaps more thorough and traditional (though not in a bad way), while at the same time bringing Zuckerman's unique talents to the table. Definitely a book I'm going to continue using a lot.

This will be the third time I've taught from this book, and each time through I like it more and more. Dan did an excellent job of boiling statistical physics down to the subset necessary for graduate level biophysics students, and combined just the necessary level of mathematical rigor with clear, intuitive explanations. The best book of its kind around!

So writes the headstrong 13-year-old Maria Antonia--future Queen of France--in her diary on October 23, 1769. In this engrossing addition to the Royal Diaries series (Elizabeth I: Red Rose of the House of Tudor, Cleopatra VII: Daughter of the Nile), Kathryn Lasky invents a diary of the young Marie Antoinette in 1769--the year she is to be married off to Dauphin Louis Auguste, eldest grandson of the French king Louis XV. Arranged marriages were common in that day and age--as the Empress Theresa (of the Holy Roman Empire of the Germanic Nations) sought to consolidate power among nations by marrying off her children. Thus, the future of Austria and France falls upon Maria Antonia's young shoulders.

To prepare her for this awesome responsibility, she must be trained to write, read, speak French, dress, act... even breathe. Things get even more grim as she is shipped off to the court of Versailles and introduced to her puffy, awkward future husband and confronted with the court's ridiculous customs. Marie--an opinionated and insightful young woman--mocks the court of "impeccable etiquette and manners" that makes up nasty rhymes about those they hate, but panics when her hair is mussed. Lasky has done an excellent job of creating a very human character in the young Marie Antoinette--one whom young readers will want to learn more about. Fortunately, her story is given plenty of context with an epilogue describing the history of the young Queen after 1769, a historical note offering an 18th-century context, a Habsburg-Bourbon family tree, and various portraits of the royal family. Grade 5-8-Lasky takes historical fact and weaves it into a sympathetic account of an adolescent Marie Antoinette. Antonia's diary begins shortly before her politically arranged betrothal and marriage to Louis Auguste, Dauphin of France. It describes her struggles with strange new customs, in particular the elaborate French Court etiquette. The descriptions of Versailles and palace life hold true to fact and fit well into the diary of the Dauphine experiencing her new country. The diary also does a believable job of taking Marie Antoinette from a girl of 13 to a young woman of 15. Antonia goes from playing childhood games to become Marie Antoinette, future queen, playing political games with Madame du Barry. At the conclusion of the novel, an epilogue continues the story to its historical completion. Notes and a family tree are useful for readers who know little of 18th-century royalty and politics. This will be a popular addition for readers who favor the diary format in historical fiction. An excellent companion to this series is Milton Meltzer's Ten Queens (Dutton, 1998).

I thought it would be boring, more like a history book

As a book it exceeded my expectations. I thought it would be boring, more like a history book, but it was a fun and easy read, one I enjoyed thoroughly. This is one of few historical novels I can recommend to anyone.

I write this about almost all the Royal Diary books, but my daughter just reads them voraciously. She loves them! And I love that she's learning about history.

A fascinating view of Marie Antoinette and her world!

This book, Marie Antoinette, was written by Kathryn Lansky. It was set in the years 1769-1770,when Marie Antoinette was a young teenage girl, growing up in the palace of her mother, Maria Theresa, Empress of Austria.
In the first part of the book, Marie Antoinette's mother is trying to make a match between her and the Dauphin, Prince Louis 16th of France. Marie must have her portrait done and learn French etiquette (which she thinks is very boring) if she is to become the Queen of France. Thankfully, she has her riding lessons, which she loves. After the plans for the wedding are set, she must prepare to go to France, to marry Louis and join the French court as his wife. She tells in her diary of all the endless preparations to be made for the journey, like being fitted for fancy new French dresses. Then when Marie goes to France, she must adapt to the ways of the French court. For example, when she eats meals with her husband, she is watched by thousands of courtiers. She really hates being displayed in front of everyone like an animal in a cage! But she does enjoy horseback riding with Louis.
There are some really neat things about this book. First, the author wrote this book in diary form, with the date and year at the top of each quote just like a real diary. Second, when you read Marie's diary it is just like she is talking to you about her innermost thoughts and feelings. She tells you the sad, lonely, angry and the happy times that happened in her life. Third, the author did a great job explaining the book in great detail. For example, when Marie had to have her hair done for a fancy ball, afterwards she had to sleep with her hair on a board, to preserve the hairstyle! Another example is when she taught her young prince husband how to throw a snowball for the very first time. I love the way the author wrote this book in such a fun way to read!
This diary book has a blue and gold cover just like the one in the story. The edges of the pages are a beautiful gold color. On the front of the book, there is a beautiful picture of Marie Antoinette all dressed up for a ball. There is a section in the back of the book that has historical facts, plus pictures of Marie Antoinette and her family, where you can see how big their fancy ball dresses really were!
This diary tells of the events of Marie's life as a teenager, as well as her thoughts and feelings as an 18th century princess. Marie Antoinette was a very pretty, fun-loving girl who is really interesting to read about. This book shows how girls today are the same and different from girls back then, in an exciting, fun-to-read way.

About the Author

Christopher Kitcher has been working in the electrical industry for over 50 years. As well as having been both a contractor and a builder, for many years Chris was a Lecturer in Electrical Installation at Central Sussex College and is still an NICEIC inspector for the Microgeneration Certification scheme (MCS). For the last 17 years he has worked in the college environment while maintaining his electrical skills by periodically working on site.
